Use art to know yourself

In a nonjudgmental space, you can explore making art to release stress and find new meaning in your life. This meditative approach toward art making is called Open Studio Process, founded by art therapy pioneer Pat Allen.

As a participant and creator, you will:

1. Write an intention,

2. Engage in the art making process, working intuitively, toward a state of flow, allowing imagery to emerge in the moment, and

3. Write a “witness” (stream-of-consciousness writing in response to the art created).

This process is conducted in a space in which participants are encouraged not to comment or talk about each others’ artwork. (The creator can share their witness if they choose to do so.)

It is open to anyone who is interested in using art to know self. No previous experience with art making is necessary.

Many have found this process to be a powerful experience in deepening a connection with a part of oneself that is repressed or silenced in our day-to-day experiences. Many may find an understanding of art therapy or a way to relieve stress. Open Studio Sessions often result in building community through making art together.
