Holiday Concert:
Portland Wind Symphony

The Portland Wind Symphony performs their annual holiday concert, featuring Elgar’s Enigma Variations (arr. Slocum) plus holiday selections.

Admission is free. Donations gratefully accepted.

Program highlights:

Sir Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations
Comprised of 14 variations inspired by the composer’s friends, the contemplative melody of variation 9 Nimrod is always played at the Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Sunday and an adaptation is featured at the end of the 2017 film Dunkirk. We hope you’ll join us as we present six of the variations, including Nimrod.

Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride
In his book, Leroy Anderson: A Bio-Bibliography, author Steve Metcalf, contends that “Sleigh Ride … has been performed and recorded by a wider array of musical artists than any other piece in the history of Western music.”
