The Marylhurst Symphony is a community orchestra conducted by Lajos Balogh, who taught music at Marylhurst University from 1966 to 2016. Our full symphony orchestra is composed of instrumentalists from the community who give their time and share their talents for the love of classical music.

Lajos Balogh, conductor, has been the music director and conductor of the Marylhurst Symphony since 1966. Mr. Balogh was the former Principal Second Violin with the Oregon Symphony and is the founding director and conductor of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony and the Portland Festival Orchestra. He was born in Sopron, Hungary, and studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest with Rados, Jardanyi, and Kodaly. He also studied in Munich and Hamburg with Stiehler and Tibor Varga. Mr. Balogh has given violin recitals and chamber music performances in Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He appeared as a soloist with the Munich, Nuremburg, and Gottingen symphonies. He has recorded for radio stations in Budapest, Munich, Bremen, Frankfurt, the BBC in London, and VOX Productions, New York.
